The 18th European Championchips in Athletics

take place in Munich the capital of Bavaria from Tuesday 6th to Sunday 11th where 1300 athlets from 45 countries take part (in). It´s the next importaint sports meeting in this town after the Olympic Summer Games in 1972 and the World Championship in Football in 1974. The motto of the opening festival was called “Europe meets Munich”. There are 46 competitions among them 22 for women. The first medal for Germany was won by our shot-putter who reached the third place with 20.58 metres. Heike Drechsler our hope in long jump couldn´t win her fifth gold medal on Wendnesday. The 10,000m was a special highlight on the second day. After a very tactical race and a very exciting last lap Dieter Baumann who returned into the national team after a two years doping break got the silver medal. All the visitors hoped for winning the gold medal by Ingo Schulz and he did so. The conditions especially on the first two days weren´t easy because it was raining all the time. We keep our fingers crossed for our athlets who have their competitions during the next day.
