Holiday

Dear Trundle,

Hello from Italy. We´re at a very nice camp-site near Rimini. Do you know where that is ? It´s by the sea and near the mountains, too. The first two days were rainy, but now it is sunny. Jenny and Sally go swimming every morning. In the afternoons they sometimes ride their bikes in the forest or go and look at the old town.

This person has a bad holiday. Complete her letter to the travel agent. Use indirect questions.

1.  Is the apartment near the sea?

Oh yes, madam, of course madam.

2.  Are there beds for four adults?

3.  Can I take my dogs?

4.  Is the weather good in May?

5.  Do the people speak English?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I´m writing to tell you that I was very unhappy with the holiday that I booked with your company.
We had a number of problems and I list them below:

1.     I asked you before I booked if the apartment was near the sea.
In fact it was 45 km away.

2.     I asked you if there were beds for four adults.
In fact there were onlyonly beds for three people. I had to sleep on a         sofa all week.

3.     I asked you if I could take my dogs.
The first thing I saw when I arrived was a sign saying,”No dogs”.

4.     I asked you if the weather was good in May.
        It rained every day.

5.     I asked you too if the people spoke English.
Nobody spoke English, and they were really unfriendly.
The whole holiday was a terrible experience.

Reporting the meaning

Imagine you´re on holiday in Australia. You´re travelling around by bus with an Australian friend and you meet an older German tourist. He has a lot of questions for your friend. Reporting the meaning of his questions – not all the details.

TOURIST

Ich würde gerne nach Alice Springs fahren, weiß aber nicht, ob ein Bus dorthin fährt. Könntest du bitte nachfragen? Und wenn du dabei bist, frag doch bitte auch gleich wann er abfährt.

YOU

He says he wants to go to Alice Springs. He wants to know if theres a bus, and when it leaves.

TOURIST

Vielleicht bleibe ich noch eine Nacht hier. Die Stadt sieht ganz nett aus. Ob ich noch eine Unterkunft finde? Ist es nicht schon zu spät? Wisst ihr, wo es hier ein Hotel gibt?

YOU

He wants to stay the night and wants to know where to get a accommodation at this time.

TOURIST

Ich hab seit Stunden nichts gegessen. Wo kann man hier so spät noch etwas zu essen bekommen?

YOU

He asks where he´ll get something to eat this late.

TOURIST

Habt ihr auch Hunger? Ich lade euch ein. Was meint ihr dazu? Kommt doch mit. Gibt es hier in der Nähe ein nettes Restaurant?

YOU

He says he wants to invite us to a restaurant and he doesn´t know where there is a nice one near here.

TOURIST

Oh nein, mein Geld ist weg. Was soll ich jetzt machen? Könnt ihr mir vielleicht helfen?

YOU

He says he´s lost his money and asks if we can lend him some.

A    Let me see. The best thing to do is … (noise of car).

Q    I´m sorry, I couldn´t understand you. Would you repeat that please?

A    Sure. Take the next left and then … (noise of car).

Q    Sorry, where do I have to go?

Q
I´ve never seen that fruit before. What is it?

A    It´s a durian.

Q    What is a durian?

Q
How much are the small red apples?
