Alaska
Alaska “ means „the Great Land“. About 600,000 people live there. 16% are native people, for example the Indians and the Inuits.
The Indians live in the east and southeast and the Inuits in the north and west. It´s the biggest state of the USA (5 times bigger than Germany). It has been a state since 1959. The capital is Juneau. The flag has eight golden stars – the Great Bear and the North Star on a blue field. The blue field is for Alaska sky. The North Star is for Alaska, the most northern place in America. And the Great Bear is for strength.
The
Inuits try to preserve some parts on their traditional life, for example
whaling. But they have the modern industry, too. They have lots of oil.
There
are only two seasons: From May to August the sun shines every day and night.
And in the winter there is no daylight for 67 days.
